Update: Straley has shared a new video detailing the functionality of the devices 48 hours after being submerged in water. Check it out at the bottom of this post. We’ve already seen how well the iPhone 6s and 6s Plus hold up in bend tests and drop tests, and now a new video from YouTuber Zach Straley shows how well the devices fare when submerged in water. In the video, Straley submerges both the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus in bowls of water, pulling them out every so often to check if they are still correctly functioning....

[Update: This specific alleged chassis leak appears to be a rendering based on schematic leaks.] The latest alleged iPhone 8 chassis leak appears to further indicate that the Touch ID fingerprint sensor will be relocated to the rear side like some Android phones. Earlier rumors predicted an embedded Touch ID sensor in the display. The leaked casing (via Weibo) also features the vertical dual camera cutout above a flash cutout that we’ve seen on other claimed leaks and schematics....

One of Apple’s suppliers is expecting a lucrative year of business in 2020 thanks to the wave of 5G smartphones set to head to production, including the iPhone 12. China will lead the way with orders for components needed for 5G devices early in 2020 with Apple expected to place orders for components in the middle of the year. Apple’s supplier, Taiyo Yuden Co. produces ceramic capacitors for iPhones, other smartphone manufacturers, auto manufacturers, and more and is gearing up for a record year due to all the 5G smartphones and other devices that will ship next year....

I took a week off last week to get unpacked and settled into our new home. This was a time-consuming process, so I didn’t get much time to get out and about, but with a fabulous view from our new apartment, that didn’t stop me putting the iPhone X camera through its paces. It has become clear that Apple’s new iPhoto App is pulling mapping tiles from Apple’s own mapping services. Take this tile for instance. While they aren’t particularly good looking, Apple is no longer using third party mapping services like Google’s which iPhoto has used in the past and Apple has generally relied on for its mapping information across all of its applications, both Mac and iOS. As Apple and Google continue to distance themselves from each other, Apple is clearly moving to bring its mapping needs in-house....

Independent iPhone 7 radiation safety tests have found that the model exceeded the legal limit for radio-frequency energy absorbed by human tissue. The independently commissioned tests were reportedly carried out according to federal guidelines at an accredited lab, and were replicated with three further brand-new phones to guard against the possibility of a single faulty product… The Chicago Tribune commissioned the tests of both iPhones and competitor smartphones. An iPhone 8 also initially came in over the legal limit, but was below it when the test was re-run under conditions Apple suggested were more accurate....

DxOMark is out with its full review of the iPhone XS camera system. Coming in with a score of 105, the latest flagship iPhone beat out the camera performance of all other smartphones except for Huawei’s P20 Pro with its triple-camera setup. Read on for all the details. DxOMark evaluates cameras based on a combined score of photo and video performance. The total score is not out of 100. With that it mind, the iPhone XS Max that DxO tested scored notably higher at 105 than the iPhone X, which earned 97 last year....

An iPod touch prototype has surfaced, apparently showing an alternative design for what would be the 5th-generation model of the device – and, to my eyes at least, it looks better than the model Apple actually launched … Background The iPod touch was released by Apple in 2007, alongside the original iPhone. It provided a lower-cost Wi-Fi-only device with many of the same capabilities as the iPhone – but lacking phone and cellular data features....

Since its 2005 debut, the God of War series has thrown Kratos nearly everything he can imagine. It’s been his ride up Mount Olympus, murdering Greek gods, returning from the underworld (a few times), and dealing with an unruly pre-teen who just learned he’s a god in the 2018 remake. As the latest installment in the God of War franchise, Ragnarok manages to add to that impressive list. There is no stopping Kratos and his companions from facing off against each other, which is reminiscent of epic cinematic confrontations such as Avengers: Endgame or Lord of the Rings: Return of the King....

What is interesting about today’s information is that the new iPhone hardware is denoted as 3,1. Former iPhones were labelled like this: OG iPhone= 1,1 iPhone3G = 1,2 iPhone 3GS= 2,1 iPhone(PA Semi?) = 3,1 The iPhone 3G wasn’t a big upgrade from the original iPhone, hence only the point upgrade in the hardware code number. While it did add a 3G radio and GPS, the processor was still the ARM 11-based Samsung chip that was also used in the original iPod Touches....

Today’s iPhone 4S launch, while bringing a consolidated single phone to three US carriers, also presents some complexities. Some observations: Probably obvious to some: The 14.4 speed increase is only on AT&T where that speed is actually available. Verizon and Sprint will continue to be at their same 3G speeds. They will also continue to have other CDMA limitations like being cut off of data when talking. If you buy a Verizon iPhone 4S, you may not be able to head across the street to Sprint with your phone....

Is Ubisoft’s Avatar game still happening? There’s no indication that it isn’t, but not much has been said since Ubisoft said it was slated for a 2020 release. It’s unknown what the future of the Avatar franchise will be, and whether Massive Entertainment’s game will ever come out. Avatar the film released back in 2009. It was so successful that it became the number one box office movie of all time....

As Apple devices become more popular around the world, the demand for Apple accessories is naturally growing too. A new in-depth report from Zion Research details the global Apple accessory market, highlighting the most popular type, the top third-party accessory makers, as well as predicting the annual revenue for the category will grow to $27.4 billion over the next six years. Retailer Research and Markets noted today that the recent report from Zion Research on the global Apple accessory market is available for sale....

I’ve had multiple Apple IDs over the years of being an Apple customer since I started buying music on iTunes in 2004. I eventually consolidated everything into two accounts back around the time I got my first iPod touch. I had one account for purchases (my Gmail account), and then I had my .Mac/MobileMe/iCloud account. Apple has always done a great job allowing you to keep a store account running alongside a data account on their devices....

You’d think one of the top-rated smartphones by Consumer Reports would become a smash hit in tech-crazy South Korea where people don’t settle for anything less but the very greatest gadgets. Heck, even Hong Kong shoppers turned to South Korea because pre-orders in their home country sold out in ten minutes. But according to Korea Times, local carriers SK Telecom and KT are struggling to hit the promised sales target agreed with Apple....

Many of us were long hoping for an iPhone SE 2: something with the portability and slab-sided design of the iPhone SE, but the near-bezel-free design of the iPhone X family. The type of thing we’ve seen in concept images and videos. I’d pretty much given up on that for reasons explained here. The hit iPhone sales have taken since then has made things seem a little less certain – as it raised the possibility of Apple needing to hit a lower price for a new model – but we’d likely have heard rumors by now if something were in the works, so I’m still tending toward pessimism....

Apple has uploaded two iPhone XR videos to its YouTube channel – shown below – following the opening of pre-orders for the new phone. The first is simply titled Introducing iPhone XR … The video briefly leads with the color choices, then shows how the camera can offer apparent depth-of-field control despite its single lens. The single rear camera is one of the bigger distinguishing features of the XR compared to the XS, and it’s clear Apple wants to suggest that it’s nothing to worry about....
