During Apple’s Q1 2020 earnings call with investors and analysts this afternoon, Tim Cook offered additional detail on iPhone sales during the holiday quarter. Apple no longer reports unit sales, but Cook did say that the iPhone 11 was the top-selling iPhone model during the three-month period. While iPadOS 14 adds many of the same features as iOS 14, including new widgets and upgrades to Siri, it also includes a few other changes specific to the iPad. iPadOS 14 brings multi-window support to the Apple Music app, as well as Low Power Mode support for the first time. A new report from Reuters today, citing data from Counterpoint Research, claims that the iPhone 12 mini accounted for just 5% of total iPhone 12 sales during the first half of January in the US. This is only the latest report in a growing catalog of data suggesting weaker-than-expected demand for the iPhone 12 mini. Reuters says: The report also includes comments from J.P. Morgan analyst William Yang, who speculated that Apple could stop production for the iPhone 12 mini during Q2....

A report says that iPhone 12 production will start in India soon, with Foxconn assembling models for both domestic sale and export. Up to 10% of production is said to be moving to India from China, with Pegatron also set to begin iPhone assembly in the country later in the year. Just off the heels of rumors pointing to Apple repositioning the iPhone LED flash to the top-right side of the next-generation iPhone, purported iPhone 5 camera parts have appeared online. The above image shows the iPhone 5’s front-facing camera sensor in addition to the rear-camera sensor. The front-facing camera piece is re-designed, but we can’t tell any technical details, but the juicy information comes from the rear-facing camera… The back camera sensor also appears to have a re-design but is lacking two critical elements from the iPhone 4’s piece: the LED camera flash and the piece that blocks camera/flash interference....

I’m a big fan of our Neato Botvac D7 Connected robot vacuum cleaner. At 8.40am each weekday, it vacuums the entire apartment automatically, and does a great job of it. A new report today from Macotakara sheds more light on the iPhone models to be introduced later this year. Two Apple analysts examining the same supply chain data have reached very different conclusions about what they mean for iPhone XR sales. Supply chain analyst Cowan said that although it sees some issues in display panel shipments, the firm believes that production indicates that iPhone XR sales will account for fully half of all iPhones sold … Philip Elmer-DeWitt says the firm has cited six different factors in support of this....
