The iPhone throttling controversy isn’t over yet. In addition to DOJ and SEC investigations and lawsuits in the US, the company has just been fined €10M ($11.4M) by the Italian government … Reuters reports that the fine was announced today – alongside one for Samsung. Consumers had complained that both companies were using software updates to deliberately degrade performance in an effort to push them into buying new devices. Apple was hit with an additional five million euro fine for failing to give clients clear information about how to maintain or eventually replace handset batteries […]...

Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again was a box office smash, but is the sequel available to watch on Netflix, Hulu or Prime? The first Mamma Mia! film was released in 2008 and based on the West End musical of the same name, which was in turn inspired by the music of Swedish pop group ABBA. The musical rom-com boasted an ensemble cast that featured Amanda Seyfried, Meryl Streep, and Christine Baranski and centers on a bride-to-be (Seyfried’s Sophie) who is about to get married on a Greek island....

We told you a couple weeks back about Apple’s Reuse and Recycle program offering up to $200 in exchange for your iPhone 4. We also reported that the devices were going for even more on eBay and Gazelle. However, with today’s release of the iPhone 4S, it looks like those numbers are quickly starting to decrease. Gazelle has dropped their estimate down from approximately $250 to less than $200 for a mint 32GB model on AT&T (approximately $170 for Verizon), and NextWorth is still offering up $215 ($162 on Verizon) for the same model in perfect condition, but any cracks or bad scratches will leave you with around $115....

Early testing of an iPhone app developed to detect melanoma – the most dangerous form of skin cancer – found an accuracy rate of around 85 percent. This is similar to that achieved by specialist dermatologists, and more accurate than examination by primary care physicians. Melanoma, usually caused by too much exposure to the sun, is responsible for around three-quarters of all skin cancer deaths. It’s dangerous because it can spread quickly if not caught at an early stage, but surgery has a high success rate if the condition is detected and treated soon after symptoms appear … The DermoScreen app was developed by University of Houston professor of engineering technology, George Zouridakis....

The first reviews of the iPhone XS and XS Max are out, and the story is incredibly consistent. While reviewers do note that the iPhone XS offers notably better sound than the X, and the camera improvements impressed many, the overwhelming view was that there’s little here to justify an upgrade from last year’s model unless you want that giant screen. If you currently own any of the older models, then the consensus view is that one of this year’s iPhones is a big upgrade – but don’t order one yet, because the iPhone XR offers most of the benefits at a significantly lower price …...

Update: Galway Independent (via Business Insider) reports that a hearing date has now been set, for Tuesday 24th May. The venue has not yet been confirmed. Apple’s plan to build one of the world’s largest data centers in Ireland hit a stumbling block earlier this month when local residents filed objections. The planning body, An Bord Pleanála, said that it would be pushing back its decision from February to May in order to consider those objections....

Earlier today, we discovered a new potential resolution for the iPhone 6: 828 x 1472. This finding came several months after sources first told us that Apple is testing an iPhone 6 resolution of 960 x 1704. Now, phone reseller Feld & Volk has put a purported iPhone 6 screen panel under the microscope and claims that the resolution is the 960 x 1704 that we reported: MacRumors, on the other hand, analyzed the photo and believes that the actual resolution shown by the microscope is closer to the 828 x 1472 resolution that we discussed this morning....

Horwitz again reaffirmed his earlier claims that the next-generation iPad will be close to 1MM thicker to make room for new parts, and he said: “Curve radiuses on the body will change only a little to accommodate the added thickness, not dramatically.
