Last month, it was revealed that Apple had agreed to comply with new Russian legislation that would require device makers to ‘preinstall’ apps as part of first setup. As it is now April, this law has come into effect and Apple has enabled the system server-side. After completing normal iPhone set up, iOS now directs the user to a special App Store collection of apps. Update: We’ve learned that while the new Russian law requires local apps to be offered during setup, the government isn’t explicitly mandating which apps are shown....

A new investor note published today by analysts at Barclays Research says that the iPhone 13 models coming later this year will “likely” have under-screen Touch ID support. The report also corroborates other details about the iPhone 13, including that the devices will feature a smaller notch. Perhaps most interestingly, the analysts say the iPhone 13 will feature support for in-screen Touch ID, citing “extensive industry conversations.” This comes as both Bloomberg and the Wall Street Journal have reported that in-screen Touch ID is something in testing for the iPhone 13....

Over the weekend, we saw a purported iPhone 8 mold compared to molds of the iPhone 7s and iPhone 7s Plus, offering a look at how the iPhone 8’s bezel-less design will lend itself to a smaller form factor. Now, Japanese blog Macotakara has gotten its hands on a purported iPhone 8 case and compared it side-by-side to the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus.. The blog says that the case first appeared on Chinese shopping website Alibaba, claiming to be an iPhone 8 case....

Apple Daily today has images of what it claimed is the next iPad compared to an iPad 1 and an iPad 2. You will notice increased tapering and a bigger camera lens. The publication said the camera is a whopping 8-megapixels, which would likely mean it is the same Sony camera found in the iPhone 4S that CEO Howard Stinger first leaked in April of last year. Apple will likely bring some of its optics over, as well....

When Phil Schiller introduced the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c last September at Apple’s HQ, the SVP of Worldwide Marketing proclaimed that Apple would officially partner with over 270 carriers in 100 countries by the year’s end to distribute the iPhone to customers. The latest report from the US Environmental Working Group (EWG) contains radiation rankings for top brand mobile phones, including those from Motorola, BlackBerry and iPhone. And the report makes grim reading for RIM, with handsets from that firm joining those from Motorola and T-Mobile (US) in the top ten worst phones in terms of radiation exposure. To be fair, all models tested are within current international limits, but the EWG warns that consumers should try to buy phones with the lowest level of radiation emission, to be on the safe side....

Remember when we discovered that the iPad 2 glass was about 27% thinner than iPad 1? The natural assumption was that the iPad 2 would be weaker than iPad 1 when it came to its glass front end. The iPhone repair experts at iFixyouri wanted to test that theory… There you have it. The experiments at their Boston iPhone repair shop included multiple drop tests with various items. Nothing broke the glass....

First, Fortune follows the Apple Sanity Board (oxymoron?)who have been tallying order numbers from iPads purchased today. They’ve figured that between the start of sales at 8:30am ET until 10:30am ET, 51,000 orders were taken. While “50,000 iPads sold in two hours” makes a good headline, there were probably a few iPods and Macs sold during that time period as well. Apple receives 15,000 orders on a normal day. Silicon Alley Insider thinks 20,000/hour are selling, which from the above, seem pretty reasonable....

Apple today removed the October 14 release date for the iPhone 4S from its site. Apple now says it will be a week or two before most US and overseas customers get the iPhone 4S, starting at $199 for the 16GB version. Carriers say waits could be as long as a month. AT&T, Sprint Nextel and Verizon say it could take even longer to get units in buyers’ hands. The demand for the phone — announced just a day before Apple cofounder Steve Jobs died at 56 last week — seems to have taken every one by surprise....
