With the iPhone 6 Plus teardown complete, iFixit has commenced work on disassembling the iPhone 6. Unsurprisingly, the internals are similar to that of the 6 Plus, but adjusted to fit in a smaller space. Whereas the 6 Plus can contain a humongous 2915 mAH battery, the iPhone 6 has a 1810 mAH rated battery. This is still an improvement over the ~1500 mAh component in the iPhone 5s, but is roughly inline with relative increases in screen size....

We’ve been learning more about the new budget iPhone that Apple’s expected to launch next spring. While reliable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo calls it the iPhone SE 2, it will more closely resemble the iPhone 8. The iPad is adding a handful of new features this year with iPadOS 15 that first came to the iPhone with last year’s release of iOS 14. One of those additions is support for the App Library that now comes default in the iPadOS dock. You can go from 0 to 50% charge in 30 minutes … but you need an Apple USB-C charger and Lightning cable (sold separately)....

The latest Kantar data shows that iOS continued to grow its market share in all but three countries – with the iPhone 7 remaining the top-selling smartphone in the largest markets. In the three months ending January 2017, iPhone market share in the U.S. was up 2.9 points year-on-year to hit 42%. This was a 1.5% increase on the two-year record reported for the previous quarter. All Android manufacturers combined totalled 56....

Apple has acknowledged iPhone XR connectivity problems on the UK’s second-largest carrier, O2. The problems experienced by some iPhone XR owners are severe, affecting calls, texts and data usage… The BBC reports that both Apple and O2 have confirmed the issue, with Apple promising a fix. O2 says that IT fix 101 — turning the phone off and on again — provides a temporary fix, but it’s unclear how long that lasts before the iPhone XR connectivity problems reoccur....

The New York Times says AOL is laying off a modest 100 employees, which is not surprising news for a company that is changing its whole model of business. One particular area, however, caught my eye: That does n0t sound like a business with a future. Only “support staff” means no development/security/improvements…or future. AIM, through iChat/Adium/Messages on Mac and Verbs/etc on iOS, is still an important service that I use. I still have a network of contacts that I communicate with almost exclusively through AIM....

The iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 12 Pro Max officially went up for pre-order yesterday, and the first orders will arrive to customers on Friday, November 13. Together, with HealthyStuff.org, our friends at iFixit have just completed a chemical analysis of 36 smartphones, including the iPhone 5 and previous generations of the device. Each device was ranked from 0 to 5 (with 0 being best) based on a number of common hazardous materials including lead, bromine, and mercury. Apple is continuing its iPhone ad campaign by promoting Portrait Mode from the iPhone 7 Plus dual camera system. The latest ad called “Barbers” features the flagship iPhone capturing shots of barbershop customers using the camera effect, then prints featured on the front of the store bring in new customers. Portrait mode creates a blurred background and focuses on the subject in the foreground to create a photo effect like shots from high-end cameras....

Loop Hero is a roguelike game created by Russia’s Four Quarters studio. The project got off to a great start, with 36 thousand people online at its height and 95 percent positive Steam ratings. We’ll tell you if Loop Hero will be published on other platforms in this post. Loop Hero was released for personal computers, and it was available not only for Windows but also for Linux and macOS. Since the game’s graphics are pixelated, it can be played on any modern platform, including cell phones....

The iPhone has long been the best-selling phone on AT&T, but the Samsung Galaxy S4 has for some time held that slot at Verizon, Sprint and T-Mobile, with the iPhone 5 in second place. No more. September sales figures from Canaccord (reported in Fortune) show that the iPhone 5s now has top billing on all four major U.S. carriers, with the iPhone 5c also beating Samsung on AT&T and Sprint. While the news isn’t unexpected, the numbers do seem to put the lie to one rumor … With Apple not releasing any breakdown of its record iPhone sales, there had been speculation that spectacular 5s sales might be hiding a much poorer showing by the 5c....

As you might guess, this kind of tech doesn’t come cheap, with the $199 price of the Wello case possibly having its own effect on your blood pressure. A new German law passed yesterday requires Apple to allow other mobile payments services access to the iPhone’s NFC chip for payments to allow them to fully compete with Apple Pay. Apple initially completely locked down the NFC chip so that it could be used only by Apple Pay. It later allowed some third-party apps to use the chip but has always refused to do so for other mobile payment apps…...
