Steve Jobs yesterday announced that Apple had shipped 3,000,000 iPhone 4s since launch, 22 days prior. That seems like a pretty impressive number. A new research note from Counterpoint shows that whilst Apple’s dominance in China is not as high as its peak, it is the only foreign smartphone brand that matters in the region. iPhone 7 Plus was the no.2 best selling handset across all of 2017, and the smaller iPhone 7 took fifth place (via CNBC). China’s propensity towards larger-screened phones is shown by the Plus’ popularity compared to the regular iPhone 7....

We will also go ahead and note the fatty nature of that big iPhone thing pictured below: It would be quite amusing if Apple tried to use this patent to take out Samsung’s Galaxy Note. Another patent released today details a different type of Stylus—one with haptic feedback. Also, do not expect to see this at any point in the future....

The rush to build tablet devices to compete with Apple’s iPad is posing unexpected strain on component suppliers, a report explains, challenging those in the value chain to focus production away from existing products to meet expectations of non-iPad tablet sales which insider sources report may turn out to be “unrealistic”. When Face ID came to the iPhone X last year, I wrote that I couldn’t wait for the technology to come to the Mac as well. Something I didn’t take into account at the time, however, was Face ID’s potential on the iPad. Nonetheless, the new iPad Pro models released just last week include Face ID technology, and it’s even better than on the iPhone X and iPhone XS. I’d so far given the iPhone 11 Pro camera a very high bar to meet: Could it be good enough that it would be the only camera I’d need while travelling? The answer to that question was a resounding no, even after double-checking. But that’s mostly because I demand very high quality from my travel photos, so noise that would be largely unnoticeable at web-viewing size would disturb me in prints or when viewing on a large screen, both things I do with travel shots....
