Multiple leaks of various parts purported to belong to a fifth-generation iPhone, which we’ve been hearing is up for launch October 7, are a norm that late in the game. Today, MacRumors points (here and here) to several components allegedly sourced from suppliers. These parts might have been used in the design of iPhone 5. The back camera module, picture above next to its iPhone 4 counterpart, reveals the familiar compact design calling for the LED flash embedded closely to the CMOS sensor....

Apple has defended its policy of using strong iPhone encryption such that not even the company can gain access to the personal data stored on devices. The company struck to its privacy guns despite the Senate Judiciary Committee chairman issuing a threat against Apple and other tech giants… ArsTechnica reports on the Encryption and Lawful Access: Evaluating Benefits and Risks to Public Safety and Privacy hearing. Graham didn’t appear to understand the contradictory stance he was taking, saying on the one hand that he appreciated that “people cannot hack into my phone” while at the same time asking Apple to create a vulnerability that would inevitably be discovered by others and used to do just that....

Is Apple looking to create a corporate news and entertainment website populated by such things as short messages from chief blogger, Steve Jobs and maintained by more extensive announcements from a hired blogger? It might be. That’s the news coming out of Gawker this morning, which notes information from a reader claiming Apple employees held what could have been (note could have been) an attempt to hire TechCrunch mobile industry editor, Greg Kumparak, potentially to take on this new role....

Following the last month’s explosion that knocked offline Foxconn’s iPad 2 assembly facility in Chengdu, China and left three killed and at least fifteen injured, the news is reaching us that the assembly line has resumed operation. John Paczkowski on the All Things D blog relays this tidbit from a Ticonderoga Securities analyst Brian White’s note: Foxconn has concluded investigation into the explosion, but has yet to release any results, Paczkowski says....

Jon Stokes at Ars has an interesting take on the iPad’s A4 processor. He says it doesn’t have ARM’s next-generation Cortex A9 design which supports multicore processors. Instead, he contends that it is a single-core ARM Cortex A8 design which is along the same lines as the current iPhone 3GS, iPod touch as well as the Palm Pre, Droid, etc. As I watched the videos and read the reports of the iPad in action at the launch event, I was thoroughly convinced that the device was built on the out-of-order Cortex A9, possibly even a dual-core version....

If you were thinking about buying a fitness band, a university study suggests you probably shouldn’t bother: it found that the iPhone 5s and Samsung Galaxy S4 measure activity more reliably than most current fitness bands. This is a monumental week for Apple and the iPad. After 9 years of existence, the iPad finally gets its own dedicated operating system in iPadOS 13. Why is that such a big deal? One of the changes with the iPhone 7 that has earned mixed reactions thus far is the new Home button. No longer is the iPhone’s Home button an actual moving button. Instead, a Taptic Engine beneath the display provides the illusion that you’re pressing the button, even though there is no physical part being moved. AT&T saw heavy criticism from both users and competitors after it started branding its 4G LTE service as “5G E” in smartphone and tablet status bars starting back in 2019. Now, over a year later, AT&T has said it will stop using 5G Evolution (5G E) branding (though it “respectfully disagrees”) after a National Advertising Review Board decision found it to be misleading. Update: AT&T has told LightReading that even though it will stop using 5G Evolution (5G E) for advertising and marketing, it won’t stop using 5G E in smartphone and tablet status bars… so much for being a “supporter of the self-regulatory process....

Ryan Reynolds and director Tim Miller later shot some test footage for Deadpool to impress Fox, which did little to push it forward. When a mystery party leaked this footage online, it soon became a viral hit and convinced the studio to greenlight an R-rated take. This was a very, very wise choice, as Deadpool ended up grossing over $700 million worldwide in 2016, making it the highest-grossing X-Men movie.
