The South China Morning Post reports that iPhone maker Foxconn has replaced more than half of its workforce with robots since the launch of the iPhone 6. The figures were provided by the local government in Kunshan, where the company is based. “The Foxconn factory has reduced its employee strength from 110,000 to 50,000, thanks to the introduction of robots. It has tasted success in reduction of labour costs,” said the department’s head Xu Yulian … Since September 2014, more than 500 companies in the Chinese province of Dongguan have spent a total of $630M on robot and AI technology to replace human workers....

We know that Apple has stockholder interests to protect and will likely take a cut of the cheddar on apps that it delivers. How picky Apple is about what type of apps get on the platform is another story entirely. We already know that, for whatever reason, Apple isn’t fond of putting iChat-type of Instant Messaging on the platform. Whether this is to encourage the lucative SMS services or to save AT&T some terrabytes on bandwidth is not really certain....

In the coming days, iPhoto for Mac will see an update that focuses on major bug fixes. The current version, 9.4, was released alongside OS X Mountain Lion. We’ve heard many reports from readers having issues syncing photos to their iOS devices via iTunes. Some users also reported random iPhoto for Mac crashes. Apple will fix both of these issues and more per the release notes of iPhoto 9.4.1: AppleCare reps are currently being trained on the changes....

A security researcher has found that the iPhone 11 Pro still intermittently collects location data even when the user has blocked it from doing so. Apple has seemingly admitted this, telling the researcher that this is ‘expected behavior’ … KrebsOnSecurity identified the issue, made a video showing it happening (below) and reported it to Apple. However, the response from the iPhone maker implies that certain ‘system services’ continue to collect location data even when the user has selected Never for all individual system services and apps....

We’ve seen several iPhone 13 dummy models so far, and we’re today seeing photos of the latest ones from Chinese social media site Weibo. As with previous versions, they show a somewhat smaller notch, with reports suggesting that Apple has managed to shrink the size of the TrueDepth camera system used for FaceID, as well as relocating the ear speaker … Four photos were posted on Weibo, and then tweeted (with a credit) by DuanRui....

We’ll start with the analysts, then take a quick look at two examples illustrating the level of demand for the product carriers are encountering. Morgan Stanley this morning raised its price target on Apple stock to $210, up $25 from the investor’s previous $185 target – and warned the impact could drive values even higher. “We believe the market generally expects a doubling of iPhone units with the lower price point ($199) and we believe this is realistic, if not conservative,” the investment bank said in a note....

Electric Pig claims “credible sources”, who let them know the iPhone 3G would be available on Orange, “possibly as soon as October”. Orange already sells (or will sell) the iPhone in France, Austria, Belgium, the Dominican Republic, Egypt, Jordan, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Switzerland and Africa. The move could reflect Apple’s slow shift away from exclusive deals with carriers in other countries, though it has been left committed to existing exclusive deals in first-ramp iPhone countries, such as France, Germany, UK and and USA....

CIRP says its data shows that early iPhone XS sales were strong, and were split evenly between the XS and XS Max. In the ten days that they were available in the quarter, CIRP finds that the new iPhone XS and XS Max models each accounted for 8% of US iPhone sales for the entire quarter … In fact, that combined 16% share achieved in the final 10 days of the quarter meant that iPhone XS sales rivalled that of the entire quarter’s sales of each of last year’s models....

This morning, the folks at iFixit have posted their full teardown of the device, offering a closer look at the similarities and differences between the iPad mini 5 and the iPad mini 4. Upgrading more often than the average person is an occupational hazard of gadget addicts – and even more so of tech writers. But I do at least try to resist when an update is a relatively minor one. I’d hoped that would be the case with the 10.5-inch iPad Pro. After all, I already owned the 9.7-inch Pro, so already had some of the more advanced features like True Tone. And 10....

Contradicting the sense of disappointment which settled in immediately following the iPhone 4S launch (largely stemming from the unchanged exterior design), Apple’s fifth-generation iPhone is by all accounts off to a great start. After officially introducing its new iPhone at today’s press event, we now have details on pricing and availability for the device from Apple. The smaller 4.7-inch iPhone 6 will cost $199 $299 $399 for 16GB, 64GB, and 128GB models, while the iPhone 6 Plus will cost $299/$399/$499 for the same storage options. That pricing is of course on the usual two-year contract through a carrier. This time around Apple has dropped a 32GB option from the iPhone lineup, offering customers big incentive to spend an extra $100 to jump up from a 16GB model to a 64GB iPhone 6 or 6 Plus....

Rumors that Apple is planning three new iPhones — the iPhone 7, iPhone 7 Plus, and iPhone 7 Pro — seem to have come and gone this year with the Pro model no longer expected, but Nikkei Asian Review reports that the three-tier lineup may actually be in the cards for next year. Citing an anonymous source, the report claims Apple’s rumored curved OLED iPhone expected to be released in 2018 could be a pricier model than the current 5....

The 30-second video starts with a shot of Jonah Lehrer’s “Imagine: How Creativity Works” front cover (Whoops!). Lehrer acknowledged last month that he fabricated quotes attributed to Bob Dylan, and publisher Houghton Mifflin immediately recalled and stopped sales of the popular book’s electronic and physical versions. It’s no secret that Apple goes the extra mile in terms of device quality, and the display is arguably the most important parts of any device. Now, Apple has won an award for both its iPhone X and iPad Pro displays. Today, Display Week is giving Apple’s iPhone X and the second-generation iPad Pros the 2018 Display Industry Award, for having true innovations such as an adaptive 120Hz display that can automatically detect the content and refresh the screen from anywhere between 24Hz to 120Hz, and for having system-wide color management....

The second quarter of the year is always the slowest one for iPhone sales, as consumers hold off for the new models announced in September, but that didn’t stop the iPhone from topping US smartphone sales … Counterpoint Research includes the snippet in a new report today. The report is focused on performance of the online sales channel, so doesn’t go into more detail than that on brand comparisons, looking instead at retailer websites....
