We have been reporting since earlier this year that Apple is preparing to launch a new 4-inch iPhone called the iPhone 5se. Our sources have said that the new device is essentially the 2013 iPhone 5s with significant internal hardware and software upgrades. Earlier rumors about a next-generation smaller iPhone model called the device an “iPhone 6c” and said that it would look similar to the iPhone 6 in appearance....

The iPhone 8 is being fabled by all sides as a major upgrade, following three years of the same chassis design for the iPhone. One of the flagship iPhone 7 features was the addition of waterproofing. Government officials in Iran have threatened to ban iPhones from the country, and ‘collect’ existing ones, unless Apple appoints an official representative in the country. The move is said to be aimed at countering the smuggling of smartphones into the country … “If Apple will not register an official representative in Iran within the next few days, all iPhones will be collected from the market,” Tasnim News Agency quoted the director of Iran’s anti-smuggling office as having said on Sunday....

Apple’s previous event, WWDC, was all about the software that runs on Apple’s devices. However, the last time that Apple actually talked in-depth about new devices was at September and October events in the fall of 2012. The September event discussed iPhone hardware, and the October keynote brought brand-new iPad hardware. The September event discussed the iPhone 5, a major re-thinking of the iPhone experience. The changes brought a new, larger display, a more powerful processor, and improved camera hardware technologies....

The WSJ revealed some iPhone 6 production numbers as Foxconn struggles to meet demand from pre-orders: the company is operating around 100 production lines around the clock, has 200,000 workers dedicated to production of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus – and is manufacturing 540,000 units a day. “We have been churning out 140,000 iPhone 6 Plus and 400,000 iPhone 6 every day, the highest daily output ever, but the volume is still not enough to meet the preorders,” said a person familiar with the matter …...

Major apps and games developers including Fortnite, PlayerUnknown: Battlegrounds (PUBG), and other titles are warning players not to update to iOS 13 due to a bug with the triple-finger tap-and-hold gesture. The text-editing gesture is affecting gameplay as it steals touches from the game, even though there are no textfields visible. This affects lots of apps but especially games that involve players regularly having three fingers on the display, like first-person shooters....

Foxconn has denied a report which claimed to describe its iPhone production targets as it struggles to deal with disruption caused by the coronavirus outbreak. Reuters had claimed that chairman Liu Young-Way was aiming to be at 50% of normal production levels by the end of this month, and 80% in March… However, the company has today issued a statement that the report was ‘not factual.’ The world’s largest contract electronics maker also aims to resume 80% of production in China in March, added the source, who has direct knowledge of the matter, citing internal targets set by Chairman Liu Young-Way […]...

With the iPhone XR containing the same A12 Bionic chip as the iPhone XS, we expected it to offer identical performance, and this has now been confirmed. Macworld reported on the results it found from iPhone XR benchmarks … The iPhone XR offers the same performance enhancements over last year’s iPhone X as its more expensive siblings. Indeed, in one of the iPhone XR benchmarks – a GPU test – the iPhone XR came out on top, likely as a result of having fewer pixels to push....

The United States Patent & Trademark Office publicized a year-old Apple patent application today, as noted by Engadget, that described a futuristic iPad cover with a built-in, flexible AMOLED-type display. The Smart Cover notably houses a touch-sensitive user-interface by way of a “sensor overlaid on the flexible flap display.” A small cover display on the front would also show notifications such as “recent emails, instant messages, or upcoming calendar events.”...

Investment bank Piper Sandler says that interest in an iPhone 12 upgrade has more than halved from the level seen back in December of last year … PED30 reports that while 23% of current iPhone owners were planning to upgrade to the iPhone 12 when Piper Sandler conducted its survey at the end of last year, a new one shows that just 10% of owners still plan to do so....

New data from Counterpoint Research today highlights the effects that the COVID-19 pandemic has had on smartphone sales. According to the data, smartphone sell-through volumes in the United States fell by 25% year-over-year during Q2 2020, but the iPhone SE represented a “bright spot” for the market. Samsung was least-affected with sell-through volumes declining by 10% in Q2, followed by Alcatel, which saw a decline of 11%. According to the data, Apple’s sell-through volumes fell by 23% year-over-year....

After putting the iPhone XS Max and Samsung’s new Galaxy Note 10+ head to head in a drop test, YouTuber PhoneBuff is out today with the same devices in a speed test. While the Note 10+ beat the almost year-old iPhone XS Max, it wasn’t by as much as you might guess with Samsung’s latest featuring 12GB of RAM. The end result isn’t a surprise here as the iPhone XS Max and its A12 Bionic processor and 4GB of RAM couldn’t quite keep up with the Galaxy S10+ that was released earlier this year....

Sticking close to their purported iPhone 5 digitizer, showing a larger display and a thinner bezel, iDealsChina has now posted several “mold engineering drawings” for the fifth-generation iPhone. Interestingly enough, these images depict an iPhone 4-like design – with the same wrap-around antenna – but with a larger display and a thinner bezel. This larger display and thinner bezel goes hand in hand with reports from Digitimes and the Wall Street Journal, respectively....

Facial and gesture recognition could be some of the flagship features of Apple’s new iPhone 8 expected later this year, according to one analyst. Cowen’s Timothy Arcuri (via Business Insider) believes the next iPhone will gain a new front-facing sensor that will be used for these features. Arcuri tells the firm’s clients that the expected iPhone 8 will include a new 5.8-inch model with an OLED wraparound display, wireless charging, “some form of facial/gesture recognition supported by a new laser sensor and an infrared sensor mounted near the front-facing camera”, and Touch ID embedded in the display....

When Apple unveiled its new iPhones last month, I said that the iPhone XS and XS Max were totally overshadowed by the new Watch and the iPhone XR. The iPhone XR reviews, out today, confirm what I thought then. To offer something very close to the iPhone X/XS/Max form factor at a $749 price point is huge.
