Developed by UK firm, sendmetospace, the application takes spectacular pictures from around the universe directly from NASA’s Astronomy Picture of the Day website and allows them to be viewed on your iPhone, alongside an informed commentary from a professional astronomer. Lead developer Michael Kaye said, “Although we know it will appeal to astronomy students and space enthusiasts, we also hope that the fact the application is on the iPhone will encourage a whole new generation of space enthusiasts, appealing to people to who want to look at interesting things on their phone while they’re on the move and who will be inspired by the amazing images that come from deep in space....

Representing a significant milestone, some Apple iPhones manufactured in India are now being exported to countries in Europe for sale, via The Economic Times. Initially, Apple set up iPhone manufacturing in India to avoid import taxes and allow the company to be more price-competitive in the Indian smartphone market, which is seen as a potential growth opportunity over the next few years. Advancing from local sales to exports is a big step in terms of solidifying India as a manufacturing base....

We reported last week that a German parts catalog ran out of current-model iPod nanos from Apple and told its customers to wait for refreshed models in late September. That is, of course, the rumored time frame of Apple’s next iPhone announcement and launch. iPod nanos are more than overdue for a refresh and we are thinking —with Apple moving away from its 30-pin dock connector— that is at least one bit that needs an update....

Apple’s new iPhone 12 Leather Wallet with MagSafe has stirred up a bit of controversy around the strength of the magnet, functionality, and more. iPhone shipments in China fell by 28% in Q3 thanks to fallout from the US trade war, according to the latest Canalys data. The slump would have been even more dramatic but for the popularity of the iPhone 11, says the company. There could, though, be tougher times ahead for Apple… The main reason for the fall is believed to be anti-American sentiment among Chinese consumers in response to the trade war started by the White House, alongside the ban on Huawei importing components from the US....

The new iPad Air 3 is the follow-up to a legendary tablet, the iPad Air 2. The second-generation iPad Air introduced a thinner profile, laminated digitizer, and Touch ID to Apple’s tablet lineup for the very first time. The iPad Air 2 was also well-regarded for its speed — sporting 2GB of RAM for the first time in any iOS device, and a new chip that put an emphasis on GPU performance....

Automatic app updates are nice, it gives users the option to let apps update automatically in the background without needing to do anything. However, this can be a little bit much, especially over cellular, for users who have limited data plans or data caps. As with most other things, Apple has a way to limit automatic app updates to Wi-Fi only, letting users with more aggressive data plans to preserve their pool of data while on the go....

iPhone 12 was predicted to produce a supercycle by a number of analysts and Apple has confirmed that’s indeed what happened during its holiday quarter – the first full quarter that the new iPhone 12 lineup was available. In response to a question during Apple’s Q1 2021 earnings call about how Apple is seeing consumers switch or upgrade to iPhone, CEO Tim Cook shared some interesting details on iPhone sales....

Data from Localytics shows that the iPhone 5s appears to be outselling the iPhone 5c by a factor of 3.4. The data is based on examining web analytics from 20M unique iPhone connections to mobile and web apps between launch and 8pm last night. This pattern is unlikely to be maintained in the longer-term: as the higher-end device, the 5s was always going to attract more of the type of people who have to have it now....

While many believe that the iPhone X’s display is best in class for adopting OLED, the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus are still popular phones, even with an LCD display. However, iPhone display supplier Japan Display has been struggling over the past year as Apple has ditched the company in favor of Samsung for its OLED displays in the iPhone X. Nikkei reports that obtain $517 million through “third-party share allocations and asset sales” as the company scrambles to find capital to supply screens for the iPhone....

Apple’s iPhone has once again topped the most used camera list for the popular photo sharing website, Flickr. And not just smartphone cameras. All cameras. This comes as no surprise as Apple has long been the reigning champion of the most used camera in the world. According to data from Flickr, iPhones take the top spot with 54% of the top 100 cameras used by photographers. Behind Apple’s best-selling device, comes Canon in second place with 23% and Nikon rounding out the top three with 18%....

It may be time to wave farewell to cheap Chinese consumer goods, people, as it looks like Foxconn intends raising contract manufacturing prices as it attempts to stop workers in those Chinese factories churning out cheap consumer goods for the rest of the world from, you know, killing themselves in protest at the poor wages and working conditions they’re enduring. Reuters reports that price hikes are on the way, citing Citibank analyst, Chang Kaiwei....

Apple’s leader Steve Jobs has often conceded his respect for Sony, but scored a home run around the Japanese consumer electronics company when he introduced the iPod, after which the rest is now history. Now Sony plans a fightback, running to the cold embrace of Google’s Android for a future iPhone competitor (probably). News this morning is that Sony is attempting to hire Android engineers at its London offices. They’ll work in the mobile gaming division....
