Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again was a box office smash, but is the sequel available to watch on Netflix, Hulu or Prime? The first Mamma Mia! film was released in 2008 and based on the West End musical of the same name, which was in turn inspired by the music of Swedish pop group ABBA. The musical rom-com boasted an ensemble cast that featured Amanda Seyfried, Meryl Streep, and Christine Baranski and centers on a bride-to-be (Seyfried’s Sophie) who is about to get married on a Greek island. She invites three men – played by Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, and Stellan Skarsgård – who could each be her biological father.

Ten years after first film’s release, its sequel Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again hit theaters. Acting as both sequel and prequel, the film sees Sophie return to the Greek island she got married on following the death of her mother (Meryl Streep’s Donna) to prepare for the reopening of her hotel. The movie also flashes back in time to when a younger Donna first arrived in Greece and how she ended up meeting Sophie’s three possible fathers.

Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again might not be the last we see of this musical rom-com series. After the sequel’s release, many cast members expressed interest in returning for another film. There are still plenty of ABBA songs left to mine too, so it’s possible that Mamma Mia 3 could be winging its way to theaters in the future. Let’s just hope there isn’t a ten-year gap between films this time around.
