Is the movie Forrest Gump currently available to stream on Netflix? Directed by Robert Zemeckis (Back To The Future), Forrest Gump gave Tom Hanks one of his best roles as the titular character – a slow-witted but kind and strangely astute man with an IQ of 75. The film follows Forrest on an epic journey through one of the most tumultuous periods in 20th century American history, from the early 1950s through to the early 1980s. Along the way, Forrest fights in the Vietnam War, encounters the counter-cultural hippie movement, improves democratic relations between the USA and China through ping pong and helps expose the Watergate scandal – all the while meeting key cultural and political figures like John Lennon, Jerry Rubin, Elvis, and John F. Kennedy.
Forrest Gump was a huge success and ranked as the second highest-grossing film of 1994, slightly behind the original incarnation of Disney’s The Lion King. The film swept the board at the 1995 Academy Awards too, winning six of its thirteen nominations including Best Picture, Best Director and scoring Tom Hanks his second consecutive Best Actor win after 1993’s Philadelphia. Forrest Gump remains a classic to this day, and in 2011 it was selected for preservation in the Library of Congress’ National Film Registry and will soon receive a Bollywood remake.
Despite Forrest Gump’s classic status, it isn’t currently available to stream on Netflix unfortunately. While the movie was available on Netflix throughout most of 2017, it was one of a number of films that left the streaming service in January 2018 alongside fellow 90s titles including Pulp Fiction and The Mighty Ducks.
When movies and shows leave the streaming service, it’s usually the result of Netflix’s license expiring and the company making the decision not to renew it – often to make way for new content or because the popularity of the title in question has waned. There are, however, a number of different Tom Hanks movies currently available on the platform including sci-fi adventure Cloud Atlas, Saving Mr. Banks - in which Hanks plays Walt Disney - and Philadelphia, the film that earned him his first Best Actor Oscar.
