Netflix series Iron Fist was canceled before discussions were had about potential story ideas for season 3. The show, which hailed from Marvel, focused on billionaire Danny Rand (Finn Jones), who’s presumed dead for 15 years. However, it turns out he survived the plane crash thought to have killed him, prompting his eventual return to his home in New York. Danny’s powers come from the mystical “Iron Fist,” though he’s also a martial arts expert.
The series is considered part of the MCU, as are fellow Netflix/Marvel shows Daredevil, Jessica Jones, and Luke Cage. The four joined forces for 2017’s The Defenders, an eight-episode miniseries that saw the heroes fight the Hand. Unfortunately, all four series fell victim to Netflix’s desire to separate from Marvel, which resulted in, or at least helped along, their cancellations. Daredevil spin-off series The Punisher got the ax for the same reason. In Iron Fist’s case, the cancellation came in October 2018, shortly after the debut of season 2.
Now, Iron Fist showrunner M. Raven Metzner reveals that discussions with Netflix and Marvel about season 3 stories never occurred, as the show was canceled beforehand. On Twitter, Metzner responded to a fan who specifically asked about Danny’s powers and what viewers might have learned about them. He cited a thought he “toyed with” involving Danny’s Chi and guns. Check out Metzner’s response about Iron Fist season 3 below:
It’s believed that part of the reason Netflix canceled its Marvel shows was because of new streaming service Disney+. Though the streamer doesn’t yet have any MCU original series, there will be some starting this year. This will provide direct competition with Netflix’s original content. 2020 will see the introduction of The Falcon and the Winter Solider, which, as of now, is scheduled to debut this fall. Meanwhile, Disney+ rang in the New Year by announcing that new series WandaVision will also drop this year, moved up from its original Spring 2021 release. This is likely due to the success of Star Wars series The Mandalorian, which was also original to Disney+.
Some Marvel fans are still disappointed about the brutal cancellations of their favorite MCU shows on Netflix, including Iron Fist. Luckily, thanks to social media, viewers are more likely to hear teases of what might have happened had a show not been canceled. While it may be hard to hear that Metzner had such an interesting idea to use in season 3, at least fans can now imagine it more clearly. Fortunately, they may not have to wait forever before potentially seeing the character of Danny Rand again; Netflix’s rights to the Marvel character expire in 2020. With any luck, fans will see some variation on Iron Fist in the future.
