On the film side of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, many of the heroes have gone through a number of different iterations of their superhero costumes. But on the TV side, particularly Netflix’s street-level corner of the MCU, costumes aren’t necessarily guaranteed - no matter what their comic book counterparts wore. Netflix’s next upcoming Marvel series is Iron Fist, which will join the ranks of Daredevil, Jessica Jones, and Luke Cage and pave the way for The Defenders team-up miniseries.
Aside from Matt Murdock aka Daredevil (Charlie Cox) - who donned the black costume from Frank Miller’s The Man Without Fear before switching to the character’s typical red suit - the Netflix heroes largely stick to plain clothes. Certainly, Jessica Jones season 1 featured a nod to her white and blue suit, while Luke Cage season 1 managed to get its hero into the character’s classic comic look, but those were one-off gags for fans. Now, however, we know Danny Rand aka Iron Fist (Finn Jones) won’t wear any of his classic clothing items.
In interview with SFX Magazine, Iron Fist showrunner Scott Buck confirmed Danny will not suit up in typical Immortal Iron Fist garb in the first season. As an explanation for their reasoning, Buck said:
Buck’s comments about Danny seem to indicate Iron Fist will follow the same broad strokes storyline that season 1 of each Daredevil, Jessica Jones, and Luke Cage developed of someone discovering what kind of hero they wanted to be. Still, what those characters wore throughout their respective seasons became a big part of their storylines - for Matt Murdock it was his suit, for Luke Cage (Mike Colter) it was his bullet hole-filled hoodie. Jessica Jones’ (Krysten Ritter) wardrobe was perhaps the least significant to her story, though, so perhaps Iron Fist won’t include as much focus on Danny’s clothes.
There was no good reason we could imagine to put Danny Rand in a costume. Because Danny Rand is still discovering who he is as a hero and where he is going to be, so he’s not yet ready to put on a mask or a costume. … At the same time he is someone who is rather well known as a billionaire, so he can’t necessarily go out in public and do the things he does without being recognized. It does become an issue for the character.
That said, early cast photos for The Defenders showcase Danny with the mark of the Immortal Iron Fist on his chest. While it could perhaps be a wardrobe choice made solely for that photoshoot - his green shirt and yellow shoelaces additionally reference the Iron Fist comic book costume - it could potentially be a indication that it will be included in The Defenders. If that’s the case, the mark would be something Danny gains over the course of Iron Fist season 1.
Still, it remains to be seen how Danny will change, and whether his appearance or wardrobe will change along with him, in the first season of Iron Fist. Undoubtedly, fans are already looking forward to seeing him team up with his fellow street-level heroes in The Defenders, but first the final Defender will arrive in just a few short weeks when Iron Fist season 1 hits Netflix.
