If you’re planning to buy Apple’s latest iPhone, and wondering whether or not to get AppleCare+, the company has today revealed how much an iPhone XR repair will cost if you don’t.

The good news is that the iPhone XR repair cost is significantly lower than that of an iPhone X or XS …

The bad news is that it’s still not cheap – especially if you damage anything other than the screen. If that sounds strange, it’s because the design of the newer phones means that almost any other repair will mean replacing the phone’s chassis and back glass as well as whatever’s wrong inside. That iPhone XR repair will, in practice, be a replacement.

iPhone XR repair costs

For screen damage only, you’ll pay $199. For any other damage, the cost will be $399.

That compares with $279 and $549 respectively for either the iPhone X or XS. The iPhone XS Max is even higher at $329 for the screen, $599 for everything else.

Apple has priced an iPhone XR repair at a similar level to the iPhone 8 Plus, which seems a fair basis given that both models share a larger LCD screen. You’d pay $30 more for the iPhone XR screen than for the 8 Plus, but the same sum for anything else.

If the iPhone XR repair fees seems too great a risk, then you can reduce the cost through AppleCare+. For up to two incidents of accidental damage, you’ll then pay $29 for a screen repair and $99 for anything else. A battery service is free with AppleCare+, or $69 without.

AppleCare+ for the iPhone XR costs $149.

The iPhone XR opened for pre-orders on Friday, starting at $749. The device is available in a choice of six colors, and shares the A12 chip, Face ID and notch with the more expensive iPhone XS. You are, however, getting an LCD display in place of OLED, larger bezels and a single rear camera.
